Spring is around the corner. For us in the waterproofing business that usually means it’s busier, as we hit the rainy season. When you are thinking about hiring a waterproofing company for your waterproofing or mold remediation project, make sure you do your due diligence first. Here are some tips on how to pick the right waterproofing company for your project. Then again, we think this is sound advice for whatever contractor and home improvement project you may be contemplating.
Create a short list: There’s a number of waterproofing companies out there, and it can be overwhelming. It may be tempting to pick the cheapest contractor, or the one who says what you want to hear, but it is very important to do your homework first. Getting referrals from neighbors, coworkers and friends-- people you trust--is a good first step. You can use this to get a short list going.
Research: Once you have a short list, doing a little bit of research goes a long way and can save you a lot of time, stress, and MONEY in the long run. Look into each potential contractor. Are they well-established in your community? Are they experienced and reputable?
Check credentials: Now, you should reach out to your local Better Business Bureau (BBB). The BBB gives contact information and a grade to each company based on number of complaints, disputes, etc. Are there complaints against the company? Unresolved disputes?
Reaching out: Call or email the contractor. Did you get a prompt and professional response? Ask some questions. Do they have insurance? Are they licensed? How long have they been in business? These are all straightforward questions that can be easily verified. If you are satisfied with the contractor’s answers, you should schedule a meeting.
Go with your gut: This could be a big investment. Sometimes the cheapest, fastest option isn’t the best one. Be wary of pushy salesmen with doomsday predictions. If you need some time to think things through, that’s ok. Ask the potential contractor questions – they should be able to answer honestly without feeling pressured or defensive, or that you are asking a stupid question. After all, this is your home you are talking about.
If you take these steps, chances are you’ll be fine. We would be happy to discuss your waterproofing or mold remediation needs with you.
